Issue #5: Loose, Missing or Damaged Gas Cap. If thoughts of expensive repairs have given you the creepy crawlies, there’s still hope: your check engine light could be reacting to a problem with your car’s gas cap. Repairs range from tightening the cap (quick and free) to replacing it (still only around $15).
The check engine light comes on when there’s a fault noticed by the RAV4 computer. This fault sets a diagnostic trouble code within the system, so you can figure out what’s wrong. This code can be read with an OBD-II scanner. In your RAV4, you can hook a compatible code scanner into the OBDII port located below the steering wheel near the door.
All of these and more can alter the distance that you need to go to see what is going on. In general, you will need to drive between 50-100 miles after you clear your car’s computer. Hopefully, this will get rid of the check engine light once and for all.
